Amy & Leigh – Married 09/12/2009 Thompson Island

As our first wedding post, we would like to share with you a wedding we just did that also happens to be one of our most unique.

A few months back we got a call from Bernadette Coveny Smith from It’s About Time Events asking us to make something very special come to life for one of her clients. She had a couple getting married that wanted something they described as mystical and magical. The idea was to hang a series of candles that could mimic the feeling and look of their invitation.

Bernadette then informs us the wedding will take place on an island, and that we would have to hang candles in both the “Hollow” ( below ) and from trees around the ceremony area. Oh… and we have 2 hours to do it in!

Here is the “Hollow” where the reception will take place…

200 candles are to be hung and placed here with the rest being hung from trees and placed on the grounds surrounding the Hollow and where the ceremony will take place.

At the time, Bernadette was unaware we had developed a series of unique hanging systems that would allow us to effortlessly hang our new candle and paper lantern packages in almost any indoor or outdoor location. This new system was originally designed for the Taj Boston and was easily adapted to other venues and locations.

On their wedding day… So on their wedding day, with a team of 4, we took a small boat over to Thompson Island off the shore of Boston, and in 2 1/2 hours we installed an amazing display of candles starting from the Dock all the way to the ceremony site, then inside the Hollow where the reception was held.

Here are some images of the final look….

There was one last challenge to get past… the driving rain! For the entire time, it was either raining, on the edge of raining, or just plain pouring. And let’s not forget the mosquito’s that took full advantage of the rain washing away the repellent I had doused myself with. That was fun! I think I lost a pint.

In the end, it was amazing! Amy and Leigh came up to the docks in a huge beautiful sailboat, the ceremony was warm and magical the way they had envisioned and the reception was the most beautiful they had ever seen on the island.

Perfect Results! Through the combination of innovative new products like our waterproof candle systems ( that were floating in water by the end of the event ) and the custom hanging systems we invented, the entire night went smooth from beginning to end.

To cap off the night…. We had one hour to get off the island! One hour.. and we had to be on the boat! Amazing enough, we were fully packed and ready to go in 50 minutes. The boat was one of those water taxis. It had about 15 people on it with all the gear of the band, some wait staff and all the Boston Uplights team etc. It was so packed with people and gear I jokingly said that it felt like I was being smuggled into the country. But it was a great ending to a very unique and memorable night.

Special thanks to Bernadette for trusting my design judgment and input. She is a unique planner that thinks outside the box. It was great working with her!
